"I dreamed you were standing
On the edge of the world
And I thought I heard you call out
With one foot on the rock
And one a cloud
Was it just the wind that I heard
Close your eyes
This world won't stop spinning you know
Close your eyes
Why don't you just let go
Thousands of people searchin' out there
Most of em lookin' for love
But nothing is something
That there's plenty of
In time we'll all get our share
When I was a child
And they put me to bed
They always took care that I prayed
But the part that goes, if I should
Die fore I wake
Echoed all night in my head"
-Close Your Eyes by Steve Earle
I forgot how much I love Steve Earle. It's been a few years, and I lost touch.
I use to write and take photographs for a local newspaper. He was one of the few celebrities I've met (Iggy Pop being another) who I actually wanted to meet. It was the end of the Copperhead Road tour. He was exhausted and pale, but gracious and kind.
I admire so much about the man: his politics, his charity work for children, his willingness to go into the darker sides of life (heroin) and ability to come back . The fact that he was willing to write a song about someone as unpopular as John Walker Lindh.
Anyhow, thanks to a friend catching me up on Mr. Earle's music, I'm finally uptodate and ready to go out and buy the parts of his catalogue I'm missing.
If you've not seriously listened to him, I'd say give him a chance. He's one of the reasons I respect you American types.
