So yesterday my dvd player started making this horrid buzzing noise, like a demented bluebottle mashing itself madly against something vibratey. I immediately thought of my dear departed dad who could fix anything, but decided barring some sort of repair shop seance, I was getting no help from that quarter.

I briefly considered the possibility of buying a new one, but felt bad about tossing the old one out. I feel bad about tossing most appliances out. My coffeemaker is 16 years old. My 15 year old toaster was tossed this last fall, and I still feel twinges of guilt about it. It's not the prospect of buying a new one or the money which makes me sad, it's the thought of something that might have more life in it, propping up a landfill.

I miss my dad for many reasons, and the repairing part of him is one. Have you noticed there are barely ANY appliance repairshops anymore?

Well I had a flash of insight, and grabbed a can of staticguard on the way home. I unplugged all the connections and sprayed them, connected everything up again, and ouila, dead bluebottle! Not sure if it was static or simply tightening all the connections. but it's nice to have the problem fixed.

On thinking about it, maybe my dad did help me out. I got his genes and some of his thought patterns after all. smile

Yeah, disposable society. "Just buy a new one!" I hope there's a few industrialized nations left in which this attitude is properly seen as = shit.
