Well, I took my nephew to the library today for our third tutoring session. Seems he's been having some trouble with math lately and his mom asked me if I could help out since my brother was deployed a few weeks ago. Of course I'm more than happy to help out. I remember the problems I had with math when I was his age (10). I damn near flunked out of every class I took up until I got into high school. I think we probably had the same problem. He's been diagnosed with ADHD, and it's pretty bad sometimes. You can tell he really struggles to maintain focus. I was pretty hyper when I was a kid too. I've often wondered if I might've had ADHD and was never diagnosed.

On the other hand, I've also wondered if it's "natural" to make kids his age sit still in class for hours on end. Should a kid whose 10 yrs old really give a damn about whether a fucking angle is obtuse or acute??? I know it ticks me off sometimes to see the amount of homework that the teachers are handing out. I know that it's important to develop good work ethics but I also think that kids should be able to play and be "kids".

Anyway, getting off my soapbox, our session went very well. There was one time when he started to lose focus and wanted to play....with anything and everything he could get his hands on. But a stern warning or two was all it took to get him back on track. His teachers' have said that his grades have improved since we started our sessions so maybe we'll be able to pull him thru this year.

I just hope that nothing "major" comes up while his dad's away. I'm not sure how well I could do the "dad" thing.

You know I use quotes waaaay too much. smile

yeah, i've heard the "slave labor" thing too. actually, you have to pay to be an apprentice most of the time, unless you've been working there for a while (behind the counter), then sometimes they let you do it for free.

but! it'll be worth it, so i don't mind. ^_^ (quote, unquote)
