Since I wasn't really able to join a large number of my friends at a holiday gathering on Saturday night, I wound up on an alternate trajectory, spending time with a much smaller group of people. A great time, to be sure, but still bittersweet.
While chatting with a couple friends and getting to know a few people better, the conversation got a bit twisted. Starting with Donnie Darko and then plane crashes in general, the subject of some of my life's misadventures came up. Elfin has frequently remarked that I can't be killed by conventional methods (which has so far proven true). But for those who believe in a higher power at work my friend Allyson proposes that maybe someone really has it out for me... they're just really really bad at it. Here's a list of some of those misadventures...
Plane fell out of the sky and nearly landed on me (twice, actually)
Drowning (got stuck under the ice in a frozen creek)
Killed in a car crash (after a couple zaps of those paddle things, I got better)
Fallen from a height of 40 feet and landed on hard surface (ouch)
In a plane that was struck full on by lightning
Nearly electrocuted a couple times while working lighting/DJ gear
Fallen 30 feet off a cliff (landing on my back) while rock climbing
In a plane that had an engine fire (we made an emergency landing in Newark)
Nearly had house I was in brought down by a tornado
Had a horrible fever that peaked at 108 degrees (I was sick for 3 weeks)
MIssed being buried by an avalanche in northern Canada by less than an hour
Countless lightning strkes, as close as 8 inches from my head
I'm sure there's more, but I've never thought to list them out before. None of it seemed that terrible or strange at the time, though... just part of the adventure of life.
Tonight is the Geminid meteor shower. Most parts of the US should be able to have a spectacular view. I'm off to the store to stock up on hot cocoa, my plan is to bundle up and then spend quality time in the VIP area (roof access) on my building watching the sky and hopefully taking a picture or two. Try to catch the show if you can...
