okay so university sucks. I'm going totally mental here. And I'm paying for this?!

here's the deal. I'm at university outside of Toronto. And apparently I'm a huge city snob and can't deal with this being a 'small town' or whatever. So now I have this problem of like. hating everything here. And subconsciously I'm sabatoging everything by being all depressed like.

there are a few saving graces. The Slackers are playing in Guelph next weekend. Woo. And it's close enough to Toronto that I can make day trips.

my new zine is awesome. Here's two sample pages.

i don't want to sound like this wise old man here (well, fuck the old part at least), but i went through the same thing. for reasons I still don't understand, I went to Western for a few years straight out of high school. holy shit -- private school kids and a student government that was a feeder system for the Progressive Conservatives... sucked.

anyway, this is what I figured out: it forced me to figure out what I wanted and to find the people who were into that, a distinct minority but they were out there. being out of your element is good sometimes, especially in the first few years of university.

just an opinion.

I know Guelph ain't no cultural mecca, but hang in there, Kiddo! Brock University was the first post-secondary institution I attended, and I absolutely HATED it at first. I spent the first semester mostly in isolation with a virtually non-existent social life, resenting all my hometown friends who were attending other schools together. By the time second semester rolled around, things changed completely. I behaved more like the typical frosh kid, and was out partying every week-end till 3am/4am. The more I went out, the more friends I made. I still thought St.Kitts was a hole, but the relationships and opportunities I forged during this period seemed to make the general shitiness of the region disappear. I was in tears the day I left St.Kitts because I knew I wasn't going back to Brock, and I was so upset about leaving the circle of friends I became integrated with.

Anyway, I'm not trying to tell you to party all the time and forget about the expensive education you're pursuing. Just keep your eye out for local events that may interest you. Joining a campus club/organization is a great starting point to meet new people with similar interests, and to become involved in various social activities. Once you start doing this, you'll probably find other kids who are all also in your situation. When I was at Guelph, I volunteered at CFRU and GQE, and met lots of great people through both!

Good luck hon, and don't get too bumbed out! kiss
