It's probably a combonation of trying to go from 16g to 14g as well as the rings being gouged on the inside edge from pliers(which probably allows the damaged sections to oxidize in small amounts). Or, maybe those rings aren't the greatest quality. It's more of a hives effect than a sore throat though, which to my mind makes me think it's a reaction.
