So, last night I was supposed to work from 10 to 6 at The Diner. I asked Becky if she would work for me because I knew that she was looking for hours and I would rather be cleaning and doing homework. So she went in and I assumed everything would be fine and that would be the end of it.

While I was reading I went out into the living room for a minute to grab something I needed from my bookbag. I noticed that there were messages on my phone. It was Becky and Devon calling from The Diner telling me that Rob didn't show up for work (again) and they were really busy and they needed me to come in. Well, I figured I'd go in for an hour or two and help out. I was like 1:00, I figured I'd help out until 3:00 or so.

When I got there the place was a mess. Before I got there poor Devon was taking every table by herself. I took some tables for people, I helped buss, I ran to Uni-Mart to get ice, I cleaned cups and silverware... It was intense. But after a while we ended up turning the total anarchy into a semi-organized system. Becky was smart enough to call Jason H., who helped immensely. So I figured that since Becky had to stay there until 6 and Jason and Devon had to leave, I'd stay until 6 and help out with the cleaning and side work.

I did the drawer around 5:30. I was off by $700. Yes, $700, but it was over. Jayson never did the drawer. So I had to fix more of his mistakes. Honestly, I don't understand how Jayson is employed there. He's a great guy and all, but one of the most irresponsible employees I've ever seen. Anyway, I reconciled the drawer as best I could. There were over $200 in walk-outs from second shift, which translated to "someone is ripping off The Diner from the inside." At this point I'm almost rooting for whoever it is.

At 6:00, when the first shift person normally comes in, no one showed. I looked at the schedule to see who was going to come in... No one was scheduled! I couldn't believe it! So while I was dealing with the breakfast rush by myself, Becky was calling people to see who could come in. I called Dan, the owner, (Yes, I woke the owner up at 6am on Labor Day) and told him that I needed to go home. The next person wasn't scheduled until 7:00. Well, seeing as how I'm a super nice guy, and a huge sucker, I offered to stay until 7:00 when Tracy would get there.

Well, Tracy didn't show at 7:00. Neither did Dan. Tracy ended up calling around 7:30 to say she wouldn't be in at 8:00. Needless to say, I was getting pissed. I didn't plan on being there at all that night, let alone staying an extra 5 hours past when I wanted to.

Fortunately for me, I did enough ranting to one of the bakers and the Kitchen manager that they decided to come up and relieve me so I could go home. But the thing is, when I went to do some sidework before leaving, I saw that Dan, the owner, had been in the basement BSing with some of the bakers. While I was running around like a nut upstairs when I wasn't supposed to even be there, instead of coming to help, he's hanging out in the basement!

I left just as Tracy was coming in. She was complaining about how I should stay because it's not fair that she should be the only person there. Welcome to The Real World, hun.

The drawer is consistently hundreds of dollars off. People regularly just don't show up for their shift... but then they still work there and don't even get written up. There wasn't even a person scheduled to replace me in the morning. We're drastically understaffed and Ryan's still not hiring people.

Oh yeah... Ryan. Where to begin.

I really liked him better before he went to Alaska when he was doing that self deprecating bullshit. It was a whole lot easier to put up with and far less annoying that this arrogant egomaniac shit he's been pulling. He's constantly saying things to people like "Don't listen to Barry, I'm the boss!" and criticizing me for the stupidest things (which, it turns out, I'm actually doing right anyway!). I can't tell you how many times he's talked about how he needs to "rescue" The Diner from "the mess Barry made." Seriously, if anything, we were running so tightly and smoothly in the summer and now that he's back things are getting shot to shit.

You know my main accomplishment at The Diner over the summer? Once I got Jayson booted from second shift, there was no more drama. That's right, no drama at The Diner. I know it may seem hard to believe, especially for people who also work in restaurants. But for the last three months it's been pretty much nothing but people doing their job, and doing it well, despite the fact that the owners and the people running the place obviously haven't got a clue. But now Ryan's back and he's brought his superiority complex and all his baggage with him. I've had to talk more than one employee out of quitting because Ryan was taking over, but now I'm thinking of doing it myself. Not just because of that, but just because the whole place is falling apart. It's obvious that the owners don't care. They're happy just getting by.

And not Mark's leaving, Robin's leaving, Beth P.'s leaving, Candice might even be leaving.

I just think I don't want to work there anymore. I'm going to start looking this week and see who's hiring. Maybe there'll be something good that I can do overnight. My point is, I do a whole damn lot for this place, and I'm sick of how unappreciated I am there. Ryan can do it. After so much belittling me and telling people not to listen to me, he can "save" them from this "mess."
