Just finished playing Hitman: Blood Money.
...Hell. I need to go eat dinner first. I missed lunch entirely. I'll edit this later.
And here we go. I got the first game in the series, Codename 47, because... well, you get to play a hitman. It's something I'd never seen or played before. The original game had it's flaws. I didn't finish it for a good long while. Then the second game, Silent Assassin, came out. I loved the first mission in that one, and the intro alluded to info from the end of the first game. I resolved to get through the first before getting into the second.
The third, I have only played the demo of. I'm under the impression that I haven't missed much, and if there's one in the series to miss, it's Contracts. That said, I probably didn't get it only because the shop didn't have it. They redo some of the stuff done in the first, and fill in some blanks, stuff like that. It's cheaper to just look it up on wikepedia or some such.
Hitman had the virtue of never having been done so well - or at least, so interestingly - than ever before. Blood Money is where the franchise really takes off. They kept the good stuff, discarded the bad stuff, and the new stuff rocks. Well, almost.
47's trademark weapons are a pair of hardballers. One of the new additions is customizing your weapons. I don't mind having only one hardballer to play with in the beginning. What I mind is the crap you can tack onto it/them. Scopes and laser sights are not for handguns. Or anything smaller than an SMG, really. If you put either of these on a pistol, if you're not just being tacky and actually need them, you shouldn't be handling guns at all. I don't care if they improve my firing due to game mechanics, I just won't do it.
In my mind, a large part of Hitman's success is due to the music, by Jesper Kyd, who is in my opinion the best thing to happen to soundtracks since David Arnold started scoring James Bond films (though I must admit I'm disappointed in the Casino Royale soundtrack). The music from the first game is good, but not that good. From Silent Assassin on, he's got an orchestra and choir in Budapest to play with, and boy does he play. The Blood Money soundtrack was nominated for best video game score.
Blood Money is the first Hitman game I want to play more than once. Part of the reason is to get the silent assassin rating, another part is pretty much the opposite. The rating is based on how you get the job done. Basically, you get the silent assassin rating if your presence goes undetected until after you've left. The opposite is more fun, despite the infamy that results, making your next job harder. There's a wedding in Misisipi (or however it's spelled, it's a stupid name anyway) where the targets are both the groom and father of the bride. I think it would be so much fun to use the bride as a human shield while taking them out at the actual ceremony.
This is probably the same part of me that, in Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines, went on a bloody rampage through the general public. Masquerade be damned. The Lasombra are my favourite clan, anyway.
