DAUGHTERS OF BASTET: 8

As I sneaked out throug the small opening, the sound of hydraulic brakes alerted me: a gigantic U-Haul was showing up in the street. It looked exactly like a moving company's, until a squad dressed in NBC suits bursted from the back opening. Part of the men rushed in the small apartement block where for some time had been my home, others positioning themselves in the street.
Without haste, I turned away. Now that I was rid of my suspect impedimenta, I looked anonymous enough for walking the street without too much precautions. In the gutter, just aside the place the black limo was parked moments earlier, small colored pieces of paper catched my eye.
Pixie stix envelopes. Sixteen of them. From that I knew now who they had sent for this mission. Back in the days I worked for the Agency, the man was a legend of sort. A dark legend.

thanks for the info on Mr. Traven--I actually knew nothing about him --I rented "Treasure" for the first time a couple of months ago & now count it among my top ten favorite movies, & a couple of weeks ago picked up the novel --there was a bit of copy in the front about the mystery surrounding the author, which was the first I'd heard about it , but it really struck a chord with me. I looked around a little on the net & have found out a little bit (including the theory that he was Ambrose Bierce, which is pretty much impossible, but it's stuill interesting to speculate on)

verymuch enjoying the serial thus far.
