So....for those of you who have ever worked in a restaurant...you will know exactly where I am coming from. For those who have not, this may be informative.
So this is my second stint working in the restaurant business. I did in college to make some extra cash. Now that I'm done with college, the economy blows and I'm fortunate to have the job I do have...back in a restaurant. Now this is a fairly nice restaurant. Check average is about $45 per person. Here is where my complaint comes in. Why do people not know how to tip?
Now, if I forget to put your food in or you die of thirst at the table because I haven't done my job, then I accept a shitty tip. However, if your glass is never empty, everything comes out the way you ordered....every modifier correct. Why is 10% acceptable?
Here is a little background on my restaurant...and most likely most restaurants. I do not actually take home all of my tips. I tip out 4% of my TOTAL SALES, regardless of what my tips are. To put this in perspective; if I do get 20% tips, then I actually only walk with 16% tips or I tip out 20% of my tips...that's a pretty hefty amount. Now if I get 15% or 10%, or even less from some assholes, then that means I am walking with very little. At times, I actually pay to serve your table. Oh, and here is an interesting tidbit....I only make $4.65 per hour.
Now, I understand we are in hard economic times, but here is where the real complaint stems in. How can a person rack up a $400 check and then not tip off of it. If you are really financially strapped then don't buy 3 bottles of wine and filets. Or, maybe go to chilis or another chain where a $400 check is virtually impossible.
One last bit....I don't get 50 tables in a night. So the excuse...the money really adds up, really doesn't work well. On the average day, I get about 5 or 6 tables total. So leaving me a couple bucks just reminds me that I'm fucked. I hope this wasn't all too jumbled.
