It's one thing to be a friend, BUT you're right to do what you did in your response. Think about this...would he have accepted your help as a friend, former wife, or just not cared? It's difficult. If he's being forced out of your life then you did the right thing in that in keeping out of his. He can't have it both ways. I understand your feelings of compasion, but you may have to wait and talk to him later to console him. If he asks why you were not there, then you tell him that you are just going along with the situation between you and the family. I just realize that I sound like Dr Phil. Please forgive me. Im just throwing in my 2 cents to try and help alleviate what you're going through.
