What happened to marriage?

I mean when i was little there was so much emphasis put on marriage about how its so important. And yet now its acceptable to get married, split up (no divorce) and just move on with your life and date other people while that door is still open... I just don't get it. I'm fine with open marriages. but when you are in a monogamous marriage and both parties decide to quit said marriage why not just finalize it and get a divorce? instead people (a lot that i know anyway) just separate and resume dating like normal as if they aren't married when legally they still are. In my opinion if you're going to date other people and remain married for 3-4 years why not just divorce? wouldnt that be easier then say running into your wife on a first date and your new date saying "oh who was that?" "um, thats my wife." makes you look kinda like an idiot or a creeper in my opinion. I myself am not getting married anytime soon just because it's not what it used to be. now its just a piece of paper its not a sanctified holy union as it was once portrayed to my 5 year old brain.

And it seems like staying married is just saying well maybe someday we'll get back together, but if you really felt that way you would be together and not dating other women and men... some broken hearts don't heal with time, some relationships weren't meant to be. Do something if thats what you want do it but if not let each other go. Cut the ties that bind you together and go live a fulfilling life.

And doesn't leaving that door open leave room for both parties to keep getting hurt... I mean you're still tied to this person that obviously broke your heart in some way wouldn't you want to close the door and be done with it and turn over a new leaf and start a new life fresh... It baffles me.

you would think that after 2-3 years you would be like you know what i'm tired of being held back into this old part of my life....

I just don't get it. If anyone has any insight please let me know.
