Strangely enough, I'm in the belt business...I own a small business that sells belts for everything but your pants. As for your alternator and/or power steering pump going out because they ran without a belt, I'd have to say there is practically no chance that happened. Depending on what drives what, either the alternator or the power steering just didn't turn without a belt and even if one or the other was being turned by another belt, which is entirely possible depending upon if the belt did or did not also connect to the flywheel, which ever would have just turned under less stress and that wouldn't hurt a thing. I'm assuming your car is a front wheel drive if the alternator and P/S belt is hard to get to, but almost any mechanic would put that belt on for you for like $30.00, plus the cost of the belt, which sure seems to beat trying to share a car for the next 4 months.
