Okay . Time to get over the boo-hooing . First I'd like to thank everybody for their comments . It's like having my own online support group . Anyway , I'll get over this little funk in time . Now , onward...
I'd like to expose a potetial urban myth . I've heard this story twice from two different people at two different times . So I was wondering if anybody else has heard it . Here it goes .
My friend's brother's neighbor's baby sitter was at the grocery store the other day picking up a few things . In front of her in line was a person of Middle Eastern descent . Apparently this person ran a dollar and some change short for their groceries and was trying to explain to the clerk . Being the good sammaritan that my friend's brother's neighbor's baby sitter is , she gave the clerk the remainder of the Middle Eastern person's debt and explained to the person that it was no big deal . She finished paying for her own purchase and went outside to find the foreigner waiting for her . " Why did you do that for me ? " the person asked . The baby sitter replied " It was just a dollar and some change . Don't worry about it . It was no problem . " The Middle Eastern person looked at the baby sitter for a few moments and said " In my country it is customary for a person to repay their debts . Since I don't have the money to repay you , I will tell you this . After November 17th do not drink Pepsi ." Then the foreign person mysteriously walked away .
The end is where the stories differed and made me think that this is some kind of bullshit story . The first time I heard it it said " Do not drink Coke . " I actually bought into it for a good while until I realized that I was probably being an idiot . This has all of the trappings of a great urban legend . First it can't easily be disproved as it was passed along by somebody that you ( And probably nobody else ) actually knows . Secondly it involves something that strikes fear into everybody's hearts at the moment...TERRORISM . Thirdly it paints the American citizen as the good and generous person and the Middle Eastern person as the evil and ever-plotting villain . So if you have or haven't heard this before , make your own decision on whether to believe it or not . I kind of figured it was either just a B.S. story or some real plot to win the war through attrition . It will eventually be "Do not eat at McDonalds" or "Do not eat vegetables" . Soon we will all die of starvation and the terrorists win . Well played terrorists . Well played. I think we ought to just use their own tactics against them . To all Middle Eastern Terrorists out there..." After November 20th DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING..." Cue ominous music and eerie thunderclap .
