I lied, we were busy this weekend. We got the call in from the Red Cross to help out with the DOC (Disaster Operations Center) because of the influx of people coming in from NO. We got there and they needed help in the kitchen getting the volunteers fed and the evacuees who had just come in. It was hard to say anything to them because, really...what can you say to someone who's lost pretty much every material possession and possibly a loved one. There's really nothing you can, so in all efforts we tried to make them as comfortable as possible with something to drink or eat.
As far as the DOC goes, they were really busy getting people hooked up with money for food and clothing and hotel rooms for those who didn't have family or friends in the area. It was humbling to see so many people, diligantly at work to get all the tedious paperwork and logistics worked out, the things that really need to be done to get these people somewhat comfortable.
Anyway, the next day was a lot busier. I was running around keeping all the food stocked, getting lunch in and prepped, empying the heaps of trash that couldn't be taken out until today (Tuesday) because the trashmen don't work on labor day. It was insane, but I got some underlings(two guys under my supervision - woohoo I get to supervise!) But I got them to work on making runs and stuff with food and water.
Today I put in a few hours before work help getting the second shelter up. The second shelter is just being used for family services (trying to get in contact with others, get housing, get food, etc.) We were putting up signs and getting everything ready for all the forms and stuff they had to fill out. They had some issue with the parking though. The shelter manager had an agreement to let a local business park in their lot, but they took up 3-4 parking spaces a piece and we asked them to re-park their cars so the people shuttling over evacuees had a place to park. The manager of the company said they couldn't because "with the gas prices, we cant ask the drivers to come back here and move their cars." I wanted to slap the person, seriously.
Anyway, today at work was busy but fun. Now it's time to clean, but we once again had sex to distract us from cleaning up our apartment. It's only doing the dishes and folding laundry, but it's still taking a toll on our ability to get dressed once out of the shower. Egh. Anyway, how are you!
