I think life must be catching up with me. I slept a good 24 hours of the weekend away. I went to bed at 9 oclock on Friday!?!
Saw SKY CAPTAIN on Saturday and have been debating its merits ever since. I had a feeling it was gonna be one of those love it or hate it films. And boy, is that the understatement of the year
Actually, no its not
John McEnroe is a fine tennis player but is ill-prepared for the rigors of hosting a talk show.
THAT is the understatement of the year.
Anyway, back to Sky Captain Well, I loved it. This was a movie that was practically made just for me. Did it have flaws? Plenty. You could tell that this was the directors first picture. He just wasnt able to get the right energy out of the actors. They understood that this was a nostalgia piece, but where they should have been playing it at a level 9, they were hovering somewhere around a 5.
But the simplicity of the story, disappearing scientists as the MacGuffin, the episodic structure that went from one exotic locale to another, the Captain Video laser pistol, Angelinas bubble helmet and jet pack, the laser sound effects pilfered from War of the Worlds And hey, was that the Titanic and Atlantis? And Olivier as Oz!!!
I wish it had been perfect. I wish the performances had been better and the story tighter. But Ill take original imperfection over rehashed Hollywood sterility any day.
