I logged into myspace, aka crack space and a window popped up about the David Sedaris tour.
I got turned on to him by my good friend Mariah, who also shot some photos for me back in Chicago before I moved back to MN, so I think it was 2004 or 2005. We were just hanging out one night at his place, drinking beer and shooting the shit and he started talking about other artists who went to the School Of The Art Institute Of Chicago like the both of us had. He mentioned "Sedaris" and pulled out a book and handed it to me. Told me to read the "Santa Land Diaries". I was slightly tipsy off of some cheap beer but started to read and fell in love with his writing after a few sentences and burst out laughing. The kind of laughing where you laugh with your whole body. The kind of laughing that makes you weak in the knees. The kind of laughing that makes tears roll down your face. Maybe I was just relating to the guy and he got me at the right moment at the right time, but my god. I read more and I have not related to someone in some way like I did his writing in a long, Long, LONG time.
"I'm a 34 year old man and I am applying for the job of an elf"
I was hooked.
I'm still hooked.
I will always be hooked.
O.k. if you have gone to some sort of art school you have had some sort of odd job. It may not have been for very long. It may have only lasted for a few days. At least he was brave enough to tell the tales of his brief encounter at Macy's during the holiday rush and kids peeing and puking on santa's lap.
Mariah was lucky enough to have this man speak at his graduation. I can't remember who spoke at mine. I do however remember the hangover that followed and I swore I would never drink long island iced tea's back in 1996, And I have not touched them since then.
So anyway, this post was supposed to be short and sweet but it now long winded because I am so happy that I will finally be able to see him
