i am thinking about the same sex marriage legislation. it is a diversion from what i need to be doing, but as usual i am enjoying watching other people's realities.

first, i wonder what the politicians in this particular part of canada will do to try and escape from this enlightened legislation.

second, it occurs to me that this is not about love or emotion but rather security, rights and ultimately money. same sex couples have had to go to extraordinary lengths, legally, to protect their partner's rights to prepare for the event of the death of one partner and so on. i am glad that that path will be eased. insurance and benefits will be easier to share and that is a good thing.

i deplore the rhetoric from the politicians who are opposed. those who are worried about the "weakening of the institution" have unsustainable arguments. it is about denying people the same rights the "normals" have, for whatever the motivation. fear mongering is a terrible thing.

from a personal perspective this legislation comes on the eve of what would have been my 20th wedding anniversary. i can't believe how much time has passed. the two years since i was last with my former husband have been the best of my life. i revel in my "not married" status. i love my life without him and think that i would have left him long before had it not been for the pressures, both internal and external, to sustain the marriage.

of course i was a six year old child bride.
