Okay, so I went today to a drummer's event in Jersey.
First up was Tommy Igoe. Few people outside drummers are familiar with the man's work, not having bought or otherwise read Groove Essentials. But he did the drumming on the Lion King, and he brought up kids and heard them drum and critiqued them in a good way.
He did a solo and clinic, and it was awesome.
I go backstage, thank Tommy for doing the show, get a copy of his handout signed, and as I'm doing so, I clock Carmine Appice (the headliner demoist) talking to some guy whose face I know. Like, I KNOW WHO THIS IS know.
So I go up to him eventually, saying "with all due respect, I know who you are but I can't place you" and he says "Marky Ramone". I go down on one knee, in the presence of greatness. The Ramones are one of the best bands ever, and I'm shaking their drummer's hand.
I'm in this pic, but I cropped myself out, cause dude, it's NOT a flattering photo of me, cause I didn't take it.
Embarassing fanboy moment over, I wait for Carmine to take the stage, and he does. He does a great set, regales us with technical elements but also stories about being with Ozzy Osbourne in a White Castle at 2 am, and I take loads of pics and after the show end up playing his drum kit for a few minutes.
I gave to a good cause, supported the next generation of drummers, and cheered on some kids doing their first shows.
