Ten Songs
you shouldn't listen to if you're pretty bummed and in a public place where you can't cry.

1. "Downbound Train" by Bruce Springsteen
The plot of this one isn't particularly poignant to me but like most Springsteen songs, the theme of working class misery and insanity as portrayed through the Boss's nasal, tear-soaked voice is enough to make me bawl.
The room was dark, our bed was empty
Then I heard that long whistle whine
I dropped to my knees, hung my head and cried...
Don't it feel like you're a rider on a downbound train?

2. "I've Been Loving You Too Long" by Otis Redding
NEVER listen to this song if you're having relationship troubles.
You were tired, and your love was growing cold.
My love was growing stronger as our affair grew old

(of course Otis's voice is what really makes a girl cry listening to this)
3. "A Change Is Gonna Come" by Sam Cooke
I think how far the world has left to go. And I think about how Sam Cooke died. Sad.
Then I go to my brother, and I say brother help me please
But he winds up knockin me back on my knees

4. "If I Were A Boy" by Beyonce (shut up, she's awesome)
5. "Gloomy Sunday" by anyone really, but especially Diamanda Galas
6. "Country Death Song" by Violent Femmes
It's about a homesteader going insane and killing his youngest daughter.
Come little daughter, I will carry the lanterns
Come little daughter, we'll go to the caverns

7. "Wouldn't It Be Nice" by the Beach Boys
I don't know why, I guess Brian Wilson's voice just makes me sad.
8. "All Mixed Up" by the Cars
Benjamin Orr's voice is so emotive on this song. I guess a lot of singer's voices make me cry.
9. Basically anything from Les Miserables. Yes, I am a dork who listens to musicals.
10. "Stephen" by Alice Cooper
I haven't heard this song for years. It's on Alice's first solo album, Welcome To My Nightmare. It's creepy and sad.

Speaking of Les Mis, what did you think of Susan Boyle's performance? It was so good, I thought she might have been lip syncing.
