Okay, I did it...
My Papa's in the hospital, they're looking for where the cancer in his neck is coming from, and they've found "dark spots" on his lungs. I'm officially freaking out. To deal I went and bought a bottle of vodka at the grocery store to make myself a cocktail. I'm on my second right now, and who says you have to use those stupid little "rocks" glasses to make a cocktail. Pint glasses work juuuust fine. So I'm a tad tipsy. I'm not doing well. I have to hide the bottle when Shannon comes over tomorrow, but I've already told her that if Papa ever leaves us, to stay away as I'll be piss drunk for a week. I went through a bottle of whiskey the day his brother Paul passed.
This is my Dad's Dad, William Aloysius "Papa" Donnelly. My hero, and just about my favorite person on the whole damn planet. He joined the Navy the day after Pearl Harbor was attacked in W W II. He went with Admiral Byrd to the South Pole for Operation Highjump. He's as Irish as the day is long, a born storyteller and singer. He has eyes the color of faded denim, of the sky on a cloudless day. He's barrel-chested, still taller than me, and has a voice that would charm an angel to sin. He's suave-er than Sinatra, and braver than Dick Tracy. Faithful to the death, he's still a flirt. Girl-watching is one of his favorite past-times, and if we do so, he'll turn to me and tell me a story about something wonderful my grandmother did 50 years ago that made his heart race. There is no one I'd love to be more like, and no one I'll miss more when he's gone. The last time I saw him, we held each other and both cried as I told him how much I love him. He's in North Carolina, and out of my financial ablility to visit. He's constantly singing a song, even as he just walks around the house. "Brigid O'Flynn" was the last one I heard him sing, and he told me about how his mother used to sing it when he was a kid.
God, I love that man. My best friend once even said "I'd go gay for Papa". I honestly believe that there isn't a man or woman alive who's ever met this man who did'nt fall in love with him. He's THAT cool.... He even loved the tattoo I put on my right arm in his honor. The world will be a colder, darker place without him in it.
