At this point, the best thing I can say about New York is "it's interesting". And it is. But the "it's too expensive and noisy" is outweighing the fact that I can eat falafel at 4:30 am. Or be kidnapped and raped while trying to hail a cab on Spring Street.
However -- and this will contain an important life tip for you -- flying in and out of NYC during the right time of day in the right weather conditions with the right New Jersey-manufactured chemicals floating through the air is one of the most amazing sights. It's often too cloudy too see much or too dreary to be impressive, but last night was the best I've ever seen the city. I flew in right at sunset, which here is at the pitiful hour of 4:30 (ugh). We took a slightly different route than normal (from Indianapolis to Laguardia) over NJ, up the east side of Staten Island, then north through Brooklyn and into Queens. I saw the Fresh Kills landfill, which I'd never been able to see before. Then I followed sites I know in Brooklyn from docks in Red Hook to McCarren Park in Greenpoint to the Greenwood Cemetary. There are still bridges that I'm unfamiliar with, but it does always make me happy to follow the Brooklyn, Manhattan, Williamsburg Bridge trifecta.
ALWAYS SIT ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE PLANE WHEN FLYING INTO LAGUARDIA. OK? Otherwise you'll be looking at Long Island. Sucker.
Okay, I'm returning to my usual focus of square footage, killer cops, honking horns, sirens, rats, roaches and made men.
Except today I went to Shake Shack to have the world's best burger before they close on Dec 1. DO IT.
