Loathsome thoughts early in the morning.
I was channel-surfing just now because I couldn't sleep and I came across something that made my blood boil. As a musician, nothing pisses me off more than MTV. With the exception of Headbangers Ball, which is the only show that highlights bands that need and deserve media exposure, MTV has all but destroyed the scene. In particular, see MTV's current false idol, Ashlee Simpson (fuck why can't she just spell her name w/ an ey like everyone else). How the fuck did she end up here? She can't sing (SNL anyone...maybe the Orange Bowl then). Is it her sister? Her parents?
For those of you who buy into this bullshit, let me lay it out for you. She doesn't write any of her own songs. Her natural voice makes up something like 1% of the original mix of her songs; the rest goes to production (things like overdubs, instrumentation and especially vocal tuning). Her look and her name sells and the music comes packaged w/ it for her record producer to make a huge buck off of.
This is why I love SG...its like the anti-MTV...its like the representative voice for our culture and its proof that people still exist that plain don't fucking care about people like Ashlee Simpson.
Ephram from Death By Stereo once said @ a show in SB that his band sold CDs @ cost because they only cared about spreading their music, not to make a buck off of the kids who live and breathe their music. Bands like that know where they came from and never forget how they got where they are.
For those who disagree, so be it...but production-grade pop-rock can still eat a dick.
