When I was just a little kid, I obviously liked whatever my parents liked. I didn't fully understand the concept of choice and I had no idea that there was more than one station on the radio. So, I only knew what my parents listened to and back then my options weren't too different from what I expect most other kids had at the time.

I recall hearing a lot of music from The Beatles, Kenny Rogers, and Iron Butterfly. My mom also liked stuff by REO Speedwagon and Air Supply. My dad was more into stuff like Frank Zappa and Dean Martin.

As I got older, MTV was starting to changed the face and sound of music. My sister had her "teeny bopper" phase and liked New Kids On The Block, Tiffany, Madonna, and Richard Marx. My mom liked Hall and Oates, Engelbert Humperdinck, and Genesis. I started to like The Police, Devo, and Weird Al.

By the time I reached Jr. High, I was already getting into my own thing and had already started buying my first "guilty pleasure" albums by the likes of Amy Grant and DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. I was also starting to really like film scores. I was a huge 'Star Wars' nerd so I naturally loved anything by John Williams and I had practically memorized all of Danny Elfman's music for "Beetlejuice."

While the rest of my family was getting into their own choices of music, some rubbed off on me. I grew to appreciate the classic rock names like Led Zeppelin, The Who, and Pink Floyd. I also found myself liking more mellow stuff by Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young or Cat Stevens.

Of course, being a child of the 90s, I had my fascination with REM, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and The Cranberries to name a few. Some of those rock bands like Stone Temple Pilots and Soundgarden led me into a Hard Rock phase.

I played music by Staind, System Of A Down, Cold, and naturally... Metalica. I never did get into the really hard stuff, but I am not a stranger to Megadeth, AC/DC, or Clutch. Rock is just a big genre and I sometimes find myself in the mood for it, but not as often.

I then went through a singer/songwriter span. I really liked Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, and Norah Jones. I also noticed most of the music I was into was being performed mostly by women, so names like Shelby Lynne, Bj rk, and Natalie Merchant were always popping up on my play-list.

I went back to Pop music, listening to Barenaked Ladies, Guster, and Dave Matthews Band. I never cared for the "boy bands" of the late 90s early 00s, but the occasional "band of the month" managed to catch my ear and I admit to liking Alien Ant Farm, Cake, Dashboard Confessional, and Duncak Sheik.

After finding my favorite radio station, 88.1 FM WYCE, I found my musical tastes grow immensely to include World Music, Blues, and more Folk. I also began to listen to Trip-Hop, Electronica, and Ambient music.

I was listening to Massive Attack, Portishead, R yksopp, and Hooverphonic. Other random artists/bands include Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, Alice Smith.

Essentially I like almost anything; from Weezer to Sting, from Radiohead to Jack Johnson, and from Journey to Stevie Wonder. I listen to a lot of music and will give almost anything a try. I don't care for most Country, but I don't mind some Johnny Cash or even a few Garth Brooks tunes. I am not very religious, but I have found myself enjoy some of the Worship songs performed at my old church. I don't really find myself relating to most Rap/Hip-Hop songs, but I can appreciate it when a performer comes along and writes songs that are about more than just "getting, getting laid, and bitches & ho's."

I am grateful for sites like Pandora.com and/or services Rhapsody that let me build my own Internet radio stations. If nothing else, it lets me hear stuff that I'd never know about, like what I have on now. I know who They Might Be Giants are, but I only know their mainstream stuff. There's so much out there that doesn't get played simply because of corporate radio stations that decide what we get to hear.
