Structure? You're kidding right?

I got so lucky with my boss this rotation. For the last rotation my boss was an information-hording control-freak that expected me to be psychic. This time I've got a *mustang captain and we've developed a very good trust relationship. I keep him briefed, let him handle the political squables, and make sure my portion of the overall network runs like a well-oiled machine and makes him look good. We have chow together almost daily and only 1 group meeting per week.

*mustang = he was enlisted first and then became an officer. It means he's a little older, wiser, experienced, and much more politically savvy than the average captain. We've got a bunch of mustangs in the current crew and I love working with them.

I had a version of that at the first company I worked for over here. I knew my direct boss well, but I'd never even been to the corp office until I stopped by one day about a week before I left to come over here.

I'd get messages directing activities from people I had never met and had no clue where that individual fit into the overall corporate structure. It didn't help much that the company pretty much refused to issue an org-chart.

At the current company there are still folks in the heirarchy I don't know (I've never worked for them in the US), but I know all the bosses in my chain well. I've done convoys and helo flights with the uber-boss. It does make for good bonds when you've been shot at together.
