So my concept for the new band...The first "Set" would be late 50's. All members would be dressed to that era. Stand up bass ,classic guitar ,drum setup all in tune. After a yet to be determined # of songs, all but one member of the band go backstage to change. A guitarist or bass player would be on stage playing a solo while a crew helps him out of his 50's era costume and puts on a 60's outfit. The other members quickly rejoin him to continue the show in that era. The bass would no longer be a standup, The drumset would change accordingly, etccc. One idea is on the costume changes to have "groupies" dressed in that era come on stage to rip the tear away costume off. Then a crew member would come and reclothe. Each era would have similiar segues.
My personal favourite just for show will be the fro era. All the members would have fro, butterfly collars,Huge platform shoes, and bell bottoms from hell. It would be done perfectly and professionally. The amount of money to fund this project is staggering considering the costumes and equipment. But it won't work unless it is done right. the only era I am not sure about doing is the 80's. I am worried about to broad of spectrum to bring in the crowds.

Oddly enough, though - my piercing isn't swollen at all or even red. I guess I got lucky....I'm certainly not going to complain
And good for you for approaching this sensibly and considering your family. That is why age and treachery will always triumph over youth and enthusiasm. It sounds like you are doing this right. Kudos!
