Just got back from the video store. Rented Sideways and Perfect Blue (Japanese anime - it's supposed to be very intense), and bought a bunch of five dollar VHS'. Nothing to write home about.

On the way back decided to stop at the grocery store. I love shopping at midnight. You get to see all the other lonely people just getting off their shit jobs working security or convenience stores or driving cabs. These are the people who buy TV dinners for one by the dozen with coupons because they have resigned themselves to a life of mediocrity and ease. I love going there at this time of night to remind myself of why I'm busting my ass to get the good money in life, to remind myself why I won't resign myself to the life of mediocrity, something that seemed inherent to happen in my life since my birth. So many people in my family have done this - let their potential wash away like an oil slick in the driveway during a steady down pour because they were either too lazy or too scared to realize their potential.

Oh, and on the way home I saw one very cool thing, and did one very cool thing. Coming out of the parking lot I saw a cop pull over the third car since I'd been on that street (the grocery store is a block down from the video store), so I came out of the parking lot spinning both back tires and shooting off into this alley right when he was walking to the car he'd pulled over. Then when I got on the highway I saw the most beautiful lightning display I've seen in years, and kicked myself in the ass for not having left one of my cameras in the truck - especially since I'm always telling myself to keep one in there for just those instances. In the end, though, until I get an alarm, it's just a matter of time before someone breaks into my new truck. Considering how many times they broke into the old one and all.

Oh, and that little burn out I did in front of the cop was literally in front of the cop. I heard him yelling at me as I drove past him, still spinning the tires. biggrin Probably he called ahead on the radio, but I know the back streets in that area damn good (thanks to my mad crazy Pizza Delivery experience). wink

Well, I just watched Sideways. Spectacular movie - stellar. Perfect in every way. This is what true filmmaking is all about, ladies and gentleman. That American cinema can still make movies of this caliber is inspiring, to say the least, especially considering all the dribble they have been putting out the last few years. As for the ending - let me just say that it pissed me off righteously, but it made a perfect movie even better. Still, Alexander Payne is a fucker - but I love all his movies. Strange that this movie about wine leads to an analogy that his skills as a director are akin to a bottle of fine wine - he keeps getting better with age.

I'll also add that this is not only a movie that would make me happy to pay twenty bucks for it (I usually wait for a DVD to get down to 15 or so), but I honestly haven't laughed so hard since I saw Napoleon Dyanmite, even though it's not really a comedy. That part about Hayden and the ostrich farm at night - holy shit, I thought I was going to piss myself I laughed so damn hard.

Now I should watch Perfect Blue, but I think it'd be too much of a downer following such a funny, poignant movie. One of those videotapes I bought has to be funny or at least not too serious.
