we were reading highlights from howard shore's score to "the lord of the rings" at orchestra rehearsal tonight. i glanced up as the strings began playing a particularly lush melody, noticing the title of the cue they were playing: 'the breaking of the fellowship'. tears began to well in my eyes,my face suddenly twisted in a mask of sadness. i had to play several bars before i could wipe my face and get in control.

too many broken things. the wish of a child. the manipulations of an old man. the talent wasted. the cruelty of timing.

all brought out by the title of a song,read over the beauty of music...
