Social media has had a profound impact on my life. We live in an age where it's gotten easier to keep in touch with people because all you need to do is add them to a Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. I'll break it down by each platform I guess:
Facebook: Allows me to keep it touch with people without having to talk on the phone. I've always found phone conversations to be awkward, so this is definitely a plus for me. Of course, following people on Facebook does have a downside. You really get to find out what some people are like... and some people are bigoted assholes. Plus there are people who find you who you want to stay hidden from... that's also a problem. But I think Facebook is a great platform for the most part.
Myspace: Yes, I'm going way back, but it was the social media platform that started it all for me and it deserves its due credit. It gave me an online presence and I met a lot of good people on there. I just wish it didn't go so incredibly downhill.
Twitter: For better or worse, Twitter is a great platform to find people who share similar or completely different opinions. It's also completely changed the way I watch television. If I'm watching a live event (e.g.: sport, political debate or other kinds of events), I'll just about always tweet my thoughts about it. I also like using it to promote my website... which is kennyyoungwrites.com (PLUG PLUG!)
Instagram: Can't really say it's profoundly changed my life, but it has been a lot of fun posting photos on there. I have always been a bit of an archive nerd, so I get a lot of enjoyment out of building big photo albums. It's also a great way to see what my overseas friends are up to.
Snapchat: Still not sure if I completely understand the point of Snapchat, but I find it amusing enough to keep my account on there. I guess my idea of taking photos is capturing a moment to revisit in the future. I know you can save the photos you take on Snapchat, but the quality is usually poor and it kind of defeats the purpose of the app I guess.
