"Be bold and mighty forces will come to your aid." - Goerte
Today I saw one of the most incredible sights a man can see. Today, I sat in the front row for "Ricky Jay and his 52 Assistants." For those of you not in the know, Ricky Jay is world's leading sleight-of-hand artist. Imagine Babe Ruth, or Muhammad Ali, but for the art of the con. His "52 Assistants" are a simple deck of cards. And the show is directed by David Mamet
And he's performing for three weeks only at my workplace.
Traditionally, staff members get to see a show whenver they want, but the tickets for this show have been selling out so fast, there was some doubt I'd EVER get to see it. Tonight was opening night, and I just planted myself in the lobby, hoping and praying I'd get to stand in the back. Instead, the house manager point me out to a seat in the first row. The first row! I saw Ricky Jay do card tricks three feat away! The man threw a playing into a watermelon from 6 paces, nearly close enough to me to reach out and grab! (And that was no trick, he once threw a playing card over a 4 story building at 90 miles an hour.) I actually held one of the cards, it felt I was holding Michealangelo's paintbrush. No hyperbole.
Between seeing the Rembrant exhibit at The National Gallery, the awesome night I had Saturday, and getting to experience performance like I saw tonight, this has been one of the most auspicious weeks of my life. And I've experienced them all by taking my life into my own hands. By taking the plunge when others can't or won't. I'm starting to know what Goerte was taking about.
