I got back from Italy yesterday morning, 6am.

26 hours to fly there, 30 hours to fly back.

Sydney-Singapore-Frankfurt-Munich-Trieste, then less than a week later, all the way back.

Shitty weather there some of the time, but mixed in with some warm sunny afternoons. I got a few pics. Maybe I'll put some up next time.

But today, I'll write about Alexander.

He adopted my ex and me, when he was a street cat. Came in through the bedroom window, more or less, after hanging around the house some time. The amazing thing was that we already had a cat and two big dogs. He didn't care. He'd been domesticated at some point in his life, and he just wanted a house to hang out in and people to take a bit of care of him. If that meant dealing with an extant cat and a couple of big bad woofers, so be it.

This caused our dogs to side with the original cat whenever there were hissing and snarling bouts. They would yap excitedly (deep voiced yaps, these were big dogs) but keep their distance. They were intimidated by Alexander. He would sit in this narrow passage they would have to pass through to get outside to go for their walks, and they were terrified of having to get past him while he sat there. It was actually enjoyable to watch them whimper and fret while he sat there. Two huge dogs pleading for a cat to be removed from their path.

Eventually, as Alexander sat there nonchalantly, they would get up the nerve to dash past and he would swipe at them and they would yelp in fright.

He mellowed in time, and became part of the whole collective.

Later, after we'd split up, I had Alexander over on a "custody visit" for a few days. That week, my flat got broken into. I came home to a door open and a window smashed and no sign of him. I panicked ("Sorry honey, I misplaced the cat."), and even though very little had been taken, I was alarmed by the fact that he'd escaped in a strange neighbourhood. After the police had come and gone, and the place was quiet, something appeared from under the bed and a little nervous "Meow?" and there he was. I picked him up and held him, and he slept on my chest that night.

I spoke to my ex today.

R.I.P. Alexander. Stupid fucking cat. Why'd you have to cross the road? blackeyed
