It's the new year, and a new beginning. I'm in Sydney, and, with the exception of a brief trip back to Melbourne next week to pack up home and office, I'm here in Sydney for good. New home, new job, new living-with-long-time-long-distance girlfriend. It's all going to be so different this year.
Sydney's so different to Melbourne. We've been spending time driving and walking around, and having been somewhat apprehensive about moving from Melbourne (which I love) I've been (re-)learning to love Sydney. The first thing to note about Sydney is its astonishing geography. The harbour, with the bridge and the Opera House and all the other spectacular scenery and structure can't be described; you have to experience them. Driving the road from the city to Bondi affords an incredible vista across the eastern suburbs to the harbour that's just ... oh hell, it's incredible, blah blah.
Melbourne's charms are more subtle and human. Sydney's incredible scenery is a mixed blessing, being more cramped and compact. Melbourne's so nicely laid out, better band venues, bars and so on ... but I'm living in inner city Woolloomooloo (have had to learn to spell that!), in a large block of units. With a pool! And a gym! And a *gasp* concierge! We're in one of the biggest units here! I feel like we've brought down the neighbourhood
Anyway, if you know the geography, we're half way between the city and the Cross -- 5-10 minutes walk from each. Fucking amazingly well located.
