After actually seeing the words mise en scene in Un Chien Andalou (an andalusian dog) I felt like I might be able to write a review of an old movie I watched out of nostalgia who's quality was not quite as I remembered.
I tried hard not to tart up that sentence with a lot of New York city crossword fare and stick to my guns, having allready used mise en scene, I felt it best to put the cards on the table.
Today's movie: Falling Down
Michael Douglas is having a bad day, and in ways that should not have been commited to film. I can't fault Douglas, he's the only worthwhile character in the whole film, the only character that isn't a hideous stereotype gone wrong. I didn't finish watching the movie, but I think you get the gist of it.
Nerdlinger on a nervous breakdown binge goes ad hominem ape-poopy on unsuspecting crooks, fascists, beggars, fast food establishments, construction workers etc, in a film that opens a can of whoop-tooshie on your bourgiose belief systems!
Okay, so who cares. It's an interesting enough plot for a movie, if it weren't for the stilted dialog, the horribly depicted 1 dimentional characters and the... well, I've said enough. I'd just like to focus on the shifty-eyed ganster style characters the writer dreamed up to fatten out this 1+1/2 hour drudge fest.
The Aging Retiring Cop The whole point of this character I guess is to bring in some tension at the end of the movie as we guess as to if the character dies in a bloody stand off, ironically (no), on his last day.
The Sexist Cop Most of his lines are "Come On Sugar Tits", and "Hurry it up Ass Cream"... etc...
The Minority Minority Cop Not only spanish, but also a woman, the minority minority cop is nothing especially dreadfull, except for the fact that at all times we are forced through vingettes in the film to remember she's packing a badge AND a vag'
The greedy Korean Grocery In my day 2004, paying 85 cents for a can of soda at a convenient store doesn't seem so out of hand. But in Michael Douglas's world, in the very distant past, this is a horrible crime against mankind rivaled only by the Nazis. What can I say, with the chips falling where they are, I think we're not supposed to like this guy. Let's just put it this way: The movie sort of portrays him the same way we portrayed the Japanese on propaganda posters, mean and snarling! Cunning little bastard! Run!
The crazy Vatos gang. This was before blacks were a popular target for movie gangland violence, and in California, which is I guess where this takes place I guess these would be a common scene across the tracks. It stops just short of someone saying Es-ay... but only just short.
The Annoying Lying Beggar Nothing screams indignant like the phrase Get a Job! I think we've all learned through repeated readings of American Psycho that the rich are not very concious of the economic problems of the lower class. The Annoying Lying Beggar is a bastard and a half, and keep in mind, with Douglas as our protagonist, we're supposed to be cheering as he shafts him for a brief case filled with food. Oh ALB! Will you ever win!?
The chincy Fast food Restaraunt This is pretty much your standard fare shit that wouldnt really raise an eyebrow these days. We all know that McDonalds doesn't serve Tappas, we all know that Panera serves 8.00 fast food. People with dignity don't wear burger-hats on their head. Enough said.
The Gay Nazi, and The Pissed off Gay people. It's hard to figure out who to root for in this section. With lines containing the word "kike" competing with tripe like "Come ON! I don't need this today." You're left surfing for old Queer as Folk episodes just to get back in touch with your inner queen. Personally, I don't know anyone named Mary that would shop at an Army Navy store, but it's cool, they've got their muscle shirts on, and the Gay Nazi has his army Beanie on... It's going to be allright as soon as Dougie mops up.
The Lazy Street Workers This is so boring and stupid I don't know how to comment.
The Uneffected Fat Cats The UFC is pretty much predictably old and monied and playing golf and whatnot. The horrible irony (yes) of this scene is that wheras our character was happy enough to tell the shiftless beggar to "Get a Job", he's also more than willing to take on these Monopoly Fat Cats. It's typical for it's day and age. The poor: Shiftless. The Rich: Shiftless & Rich.
...okay it pretty much peters out here to a cookie cutter standoff between the last day cop and the crazy guy. Guess who wins?
