i agree- good music is a must. fuels the creative fire. or something like that. one of my favorite ways to do quick, gestural stuff: do a bunch of underpaintings- just cover the canvas as quick and haphazardly as you can. then go back with white and block out bits and pieces. every time you add something, take part of it away. work on three or four at a time. go back and forth between 'em. that way you won't be as tempted to overwork anything. the good thing about painting, though- you can always paint over anything you don't like! good luck!
