tonight I went to my friend's birthday party
it was fun
they had lights and good music and mexican food
the lights licked the walls like flames
projecting images of lines and circles on peoples bodies
as they laughed and tried to keep the spotlights out of their faces
like trying not to look at the sun
the music blared playing the best indie bands
like elefant and rival schools
people were introduced to new bands
some sang the words with confidence
rocking their head, screaming and smiling
"come on, steal me"
there were lovers holding each other
there were many dance-offs
complete with stereotypical 80s dance poses
and the words "oh snap, ghetto blaster!!"
me and one of my friends challenged two of my friends
to a West Side Story dance off
snapping and shimmying, mocking and rocking
she also hired a band
they were ok
all of the songs sounded the same
but that's because we didn't know the words
most of the people there didn't know what to think
they weren't huge fans of rock
or hadn't been to a real live show before
but we still applauded
they deserved applause
because we were a couple of tough customers
