I just watched Children of Men in the theatres, with my dad. It was an open caption show, and my dad talks a lot during movies. I suppose those problems cancel each other out for our deaf patrons, but I was simply doubly-annoyed.

It was a fairly interesting movie. No more children, yes, very Handmaid's Tale. But I found it to be short, and although everyone is heralding it as thought-provoking, it was also thin sauce. They didn't really touch on the philosophical aspects of humans dying out, and didn't give us any details on the state of the world, except that a nuke went off in New York, and Britain has become a facist police-state.
The first half of the movie kills off Julianne Moore in a heartbeat, just as you are getting a sense for her character (which, sadly, may have been the only redemption as opposite Clive Owen's deadpan performance.)
The second half is a slew of 'Homeland Security' and Abu Gharib-esque jabs at Bush and Blair Administrations' foreign policies, coupled with some predictable plot twists. Gee, thanks, Mr. Director. We hate Bush, too. You're not alone.
Black and white credits end the movie with a laughtrack of children's voices. Yay! I guess everybody started having lots of babies and everyone lived happily ever after! Huzzah!

But hey, I enjoyed it.

I want to see it, but I am going to wait until it comes out to rent....
