Walking to work yesterday in the freshly fallen snow I realized something about the route I was taking, a route that had me literally following in my father's footsteps.

I smiled to myself upon this realization, upon seeing his footprints on the ground before me, and I was glad to have such a man to follow behind.

We've butted heads in the past and we will in the future, we have enjoyed trips together and we will again in the future, he's taught me many things in my life and probably still will be able to in the years to come. Growing up he worked on the road, would be home on the weekends, and then had the winters off because you can't do road construction then. Because of this our interactions were various activities, and various spans of time, but I turned out to act quite a bit like him despite all this, and to my mother's chagrin. biggrin

I once told a friend of mine in high school that my biggest fear in life was that I was going to wind up in Glendive working for the railroad and never get out. The footsteps I am following in now have me working for the railroad in Glendive...but I don't have the fear of it as I have grown and realized that steps like this can be good, can be necessary, and can be exactly what you need.

Student loans brought me there, and the paychecks will let me leave with freedom I might not have had otherwise. I am proud to follow in Greg Sadorf's footsteps, glad to have this time to spend with my parents as I plan on living hundreds of miles away in the future, happy to have the freedom my job allows, and now all I have to do is get the plan set in stone so that I will move forward, like I know I will have to lest I become a jaded little bastard here in Glendive.

I woke up mad that there was once again snow on the ground after it had finally been clearing up and spring was making itself closer to us, but I didn't know the smile that the snow would cause. Didn't know the moment of introspection it would stir as I neared the roundhouse. Didn't know the perspecitve gained by looking down at trodden snow.

Felt like I needed to add this picture to give an image of my folks, this is them at a wedding in February. biggrin
