I knew I shouldn't talk politics at work, and yesterday proved that beyond a doubt.
An older guy started talking about health care and how he didn't think it was that great an idea and started talking about how he saw something on tv about it, and I innocently asked what he saw that on and the response was Fox News, well it was off after that.
He came at me with how paying for the health care reform was going to cost me a lot in my lifetime, and of course I brought up the benefits and he said how it was fine while I was single, but when I got a girlfriend and had some kids and started paying for all that I'd be sorry. Also somewhere in there he told me he was glad he wouldn't be paying taxes much longer and I couldn't quite follow that, and told him so and he said well only federal and that was just for a few more years, apparently he figures once he retires he won't have to pay taxes anymore, and that was news to me, hadn't quite heard that one before.
Then it was off to the Cap and Trade stuff, since we work for railroad and run coal trains he told me I wuld be lucky to have a job because you know the first place they hit would be coal, that's when I threw the guess it's a good thing I went to school then, to which he said where you gonna get a job at museum (that's what I studied with my Anthropology degree) so of course I said damn near anywhere. After all that he decided to inform me that if these things were to pass I could look forward to paying 54% of my wages in taxes, which I had never heard of and told him so, he went after me a bit on that and then I guess he figured I wouldn't be backing down so he moved on to the next best thing......
Why the hell did he bow down to the guy when he went over to the Middle East. I said it was a sign of respectto him, a greeting, and he said why should he have to do that, of course I said he decided to do it to show respect to him, well hell Obama could have just shook his hand, I siad itwasn't the custom and that he was merely showing him respect, which led to the final argument of his, if you want to learn respect join the military, well I had to go back outside and work so I didn't get to find out where that argument was going.
The rest of the day was wonderful as the big dude didn't talk the whole rest of the day which was bliss. Today when I got to work he was talkiing to another guy about politics with a sympathetic ear so I just went back to my locker, that was when I heard him telling the other guy, well I told him this, and I told him that, and blah blah blah, what a big bag a douche.
I guess a bunch of other guys were gettng him wound up today, pretty much he is a gasbag that loves arguing, and even when he loses you both are right.
Hell, I was telling dad about it and he said he argued with him one time and had to walk away, and when he came back the guy was arguing on the sde that dad had first presented.
So yeah, I was reminded why I don't talk politics down at the roundhouse, especially seeing as how I disagree with 80% of em. I still don't get how these people can work a union job, like working a union job, and yet they are staunch Republicans, a party that cannotstand unions, how does that work?
