So the layoffs hit BNSF here in Glendive yesterday, luckily enough I am high enough up the seniority list to make it through.
We made it through the first go round of cuts at our diesel shop, but couldn't make it through this second one, it sucks because the train traffic is still going steady through town here, but they have been making cuts and now we get hit. I feel bad for the younger guys, but they seem to be taking it pretty well. I guess they get 6 months of railroad unemployment which consists of 350 a week, which isn't all that bad, so at least they have that going for them.
I was going to have to go back to the night shift, which I was dreading, but luckily a machinist put in his retirement papers today so it saved one Hostler, which is what I am, which in turn saved one day job that I could take, which I jumped on. I might not have good days off, Tuesday Wednesday, or be able to go out on the weekends, like I did on afternoons when I got off work at 11, but I still have a job, and I am not working nights, pretty good deal that is. So tonight I have to try to go to sleep so I can wake up at 6 to be at work at 7, definitely a best case scenario.
The only bad thing about going to the day shift is that now my mom will have to take my dog out to the vet's for her surgery. She has a lump on her back that could be a tumor, that grew and decided to break the skin. She is right around 13 so I was going to leave it if it didn't bother her, but this is beyond that now, although it doesn't seem to bother her even though it is still not seemingly bothering her. I am sure she will be fine, but I worry about her. She has cataracts so she can't see, but she knows her way around the house and is happy, so I will just make sure that all is taken care of and that she stays that way.
So yeah no more going out on the weekends for me, unless I don't drink that is, so that will save me money as well. If anything I will catch up on my reading, so that's nice.
