The movie is well done enough to make it so that you could come away with the feeling either way... being more spiritually inclined... I would say possessed. It's also *easier* for me to believe in a possession over a string of 'this medical condition combined with this random occurrance and the tidal atlas at a certain level' The possession idea seemed solid to me, while the medical one seemed... like a foxhunt.

Now, going and reading the real story... Annaliese was fucking possessed. You can't fucking eat coal, plain and simple. Unless you happen to be a demon. ( Or a little german girl who happens to be hosting 6 of them) Let's see if I can remember... Lucifer, Belial, Iscariot, Legion, Hitler, and Fleischmann? Maybe I'm close...

But... the difference between the movie and the actual events... is that the movie makes it sound like all this happened to a poor little 19 year old girl. It didn't. It started happening to a 16 year old girl... and after 8 years of anguish (and ten months of weekly exorcism rites) the girl was finally awarded death.

I watched this news article once... about some scientist that was mechanically reproducing the way the neurons of a devout person reacted during a period of heavy spiritual interaction. When the machine stimulated the neurons in this same manner, essentially a target-specific electric pulse, the person receiving the transmission felt God's presence (or something therein). They recorded it... and it sent shiver's up my spine. Not that it was creepy... it's just that the reporter *actually* believed he was receiving supernatural blessing, but it was being produced by a machine. What does this show? That the influence of God, spirits, demons, whatever, does create an actual physical reaction in our bodies (yes, this seems rather obvious to both you and I, I know), and that it can be monitored. Witnessed and recorded, even.

Tangent... maybe, maybe not. Could demonic possession be just the misfirings of a few important spots in our brain? Possibly. But... knowing that supernatural influence manifests itself in physical ways... could those clustered neurons and misaligned protein build-ups not also be *read* by a machine meant to track mental illness? If an actual demonic possession illicited similar brain fuck-ups to that of, say hallucinatory schizophrenia, would not an EEG designed to pick up these inconsistencies *also* pick up the ones caused by demonic possession? Would any doctor, doctors being in a field which almost moves hand and hand with atheism, not choose the Razor of "atypical symptoms"?

I lost my point somewhere. I believe she was possessed.
