Narcissism is an essential human trait, a survival method meant to deter the emotional rigors of the social lifespan. If we were smart enough not to like ourselves or to recognize the issues with what we do, we would probably all be dead. This does not preclude the existence of contradictory influences like guilt, shame, etc. All are built into the premise of the continuance of the race. End result, we will all be either miserable, ignorant or happily suicidal presuming none of use are saints (god forbid we might be honest, but that would require being aware enough to know something to be honest about). Or we can relish the life found in dissociation and observation, acts which require no personal accountability or judgment but through which the race may improve.
