So basically, my school has this new organization, The Gay/Straight Alliance and they have something called The Day of Silence. What this day is, basically gays and bisexuals and lesbians have been silenced for so many years, so we were recognized today by being silent, not saying a word. I'm still not talking, I haven't peeped since 8am this morning. It's strange. I communicate with either paper and pen or hand motions, etc. Our intention was to draw attention to us, whenever someone asked why we were quiet, we showed them this card that read:

"Please understand my reason for not speaking today. I support lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights. People who are silent today believe that the laws and attitudes should be inclusive of people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. The day of silence is to draw attention to those who have been silenced by hatred, oppression, and prejudice. Think about the voices you are not hearing? What can you do to end the silence?"

My girlfriends and I wore our rainbow bracelets (Like...99% of my female friends are lesbian) and we made kissy faces at each other, as an "i love you" gesture (hehehe). The weirdest thing was when Ira, this guy in my photo class asked if I would pose for him outside. He seems to be very bi or gay...which is cool, he's a neat boy. It was weird -- him directing me on what to do without using voice. He used gestures and moved me around to where he wanted me. Yeah...it was my first ever modeling shoot today, haha. And it wasn't so bad. I've always hated posing for people but...I don't know. It's just been weird. Everyone says I should model...and I just say "beh" to that. Beh!

Doesn't it seem odd that you'd be silent in order to draw attention? Doesn't that seem backwards? Isn't it interesting that our society is so loud and noisy all the time that to get anyone's attention you have to be mute?

Well, good for you and yours. Sounds like it's making the day a little more interesting, in addition to serving a good cause.

Ballwin, huh? What school do you go to? (Unless you don't want to post that kind of thing here, which is understandable...) I was a Eureka grad, myself.

The silent thing is a pretty interesting way to go about raising awareness. Props.
