i just spent a month in new zealand last year. its amazing. and i would say woofing would be a good way to do it. as long as you can find the time to travel all around, cause its amazing there.
as far as hawaii goes, ive only been to kauai. i camped all over that island for a couple weeks and its so rad. plus you can car camp because the rental cars there are sooo cheap. i didnt go to the other islands, but i would still recommend kauai. its the best for outdoor stuff.
