Well, I'm back from two days in the wilds of the West Midlands (Telford to be precise) with my colleague and friend Emma and it's such a relief to be back in the city.

Not that I have anything against the English countryside and I was on a business trip so everything was paid for on the company credit card but strolling along unlit country roads and woodland cycle paths after several beers in the local pub was quite a strange experience having spent 13 years living in a light polluted city.

I can definitely say I'm glad I didnt choose to go to Wolverhampton University though. That's where our conference was being held and it was out in the middle of bloody nowhere!! Their bar closed at 7pm eeek and there was only one pub within staggering distance of the campus. The poor pub landlord, who was in his 60's, was quite shocked to have 250 conference delegates all descend on his little roadside inn at 7.30pm for a pint or two.

Still, even though Telford turned out to be the pit at the arse end of the universe Wolverhampton proper proved to be a pleasant surprise, even if we did end up driving round the ring road twice looking for the exit for the railway station. biggrin Never put two women in charge of a car and a road map. Our record still stands at 4 times round the Birmingham one way system looking for Aston University. whatever

I am a country boy who only likes cities from a distance and for a bit of shopping. Other than that the Country is my home.
West Midlands is a beautifull place, was there eleven years ago.

It could've been worse...thirty miles north-east from there and you would've been in Stoke-on-Trent! eeek Having lived there for four years, I wouldn't wish that place on my worst enemy...
