This somehow became the best birthday I've had in a seriously long time.

It started the day before, with my best friend appearing to attempt to make plans with me. This was a hard lesson in cynicism and giving people the benefit of the doubt. I'd been prepping myself for what I assumed to be the inevitable: her blowing me off for alternate plans with her girlfriend. I instead got a wicked fun night out involving bowling, drinking, and staunchly refusing to allow me to pay for anything. As humbled as I was for wrongfully assuming the worst, I was all the more humbled for being treated with such generosity -- birthday or no, I couldn't find myself so deserving.

It continued with a day at Starbucks. One I hadn't booked off, partly to see if I'd get scheduled to work. And work I did. In fact, I even worked a good three hours longer than scheduled, to cover a bit of a shortfall. Truth be told, it was some of the most quality time I've spent in a Starbucks apron. As busy as we got, we were never overwhelmed. We all worked so well together, like - dare I say it - a team. I left the store not drained from a strenuous day of attempting to keep up with crushing demand, but energized from the positive energy of a job well done.

At night, my dad took me out to dinner. While there a couple of other patrons recognized me as the barista who consistently provides them with great beverages and sought to return the favour - and bought us both a beverage! The only person more shell-shocked by this generous gesture was my dad, stunned at my notoriety about town.

Now I come home to near-countless well-wishes. I understand that this is a major appeal of Facebook - someone on your friends' list has a birthday, it shows in your notifications, and a click later you've done your duty - but all the same, I've never had a birthday with so many well-wishes. Even here on SG, I leave in the morning with 2 comments on my blog, and return with 13 (this is a rare occurrence for me, okay??), all happy birthday wishes! It's just cool.

Oh yeah, and I went to the beer store for a 12-pack, and the cashier still did a double take when she saw my ID. It's hard to have an "age crisis" when people still expect you to be so young.

You're welcome. Now you won't get those embarrassing No-Reason-Boners in the middle of important meetings or while you're on a date. biggrin
