So last night I wasn't working, and BrightRedScream wasn't working.... so SPONTANEOUS DATE NIGHT!!! we went and saw 1408.

Spooky little flick that. I was curious to see how they'd spin a short story into two hours of screen time, but it was quite good. It does all the things scary movies are supposed to. Jump-out-of-your-seat BOO! moments? Check. Protracted scenes of creeping dread that tie your stomach in the kinds of knots that'd make a sailor proud? Check. Make you take stock of the things that personally give you the heebie jeebies? Checkaroo. Leave some open moments for you to interprent (or for your subconscious to interpret into some freaky dreams later on)? Checkaroni.

Save for maybe some questionable dialogue (and that's probably just me anyway), and a couple of plot points that felt like they were on fast forward, 1408 was utterly solid. The missus and I both LOVE Samuel L. Jackson, even if we all know that scriptwriters just hunt for a way for him to say the "F" word. Nobody does it better. Jon Cusack was a bit of a surprise, just because I've never seen him do "serious" in movies before.

It is one of those scary movies that's lean on the gore, and heavy on the psychological fuckery. If you're down with that, you'll probably dig the movie a whole lot.

Glad to hear that "1408" is a good movie, I really want to see it!

I love John Cusack to death - if you want to see him in other serious roles, check out "Identity," "Runaway Jury," or "Max." He's also supposed to be great in this movie called "Grace is Gone" that premiered at Sundance this year.
