the problem with being bored is that eventually you'll think of something you want to do. on the surface, that would seem like a good thing...and most of the time it IS a good thing. there are times however, when it just leads to trouble. tonight, for instance: I'm sitting around bored, bouncing from video game to video game to movie to book, but I just can't seem to keep myself occupied. then I strike upon something to do: there's a sharp metal edge on the stove that I've been meaning to file down. sounds simple enough. problem: can't find the set of files that I purchased long ago for some forgotten purpose. well, there are only a limited number of places a set of files could be in my apartment. how long can it take to search 550 sq. ft? a couple of hours, evidently. I ended up taking everything out of the huge storage closet, opening each box (many of which haven't been opened since I last moved about 3 years ago), and going piecemeal through the contents, searching for the elusive abrasive tools. to make a long story short, I did end up finding the files (in the last box I had left to search, of course.) along the way though, I made an interesting discovery: a box containing:
empty cd jewel cases, approx. 75
empty penguin mint tins, 38.
now, the jewel cases are somewhat understandable -- I used to buy a cd, and then take the booklet and cd and put them into a cd wallet that I would take on trips. the penguin mint tins... those were the puzzlers. when I had just graduated college, I was a serious caffeine freak. I became obsessed with these caffeinated peppermints that I ordered online. I was never without a tin of them, for the better part of a year. eventually, I managed to break that habit and revert to old-fashioned beverage-consuming to get my caffeine. yet, for some un-fucking-known reason, I decided to keep 38 empty penguin mint tins. not only that, but I *packed* them when I moved.
what the hell did I think I was going to do with 38 goddamn metal mint tins?
