"Well, children cry for mother
I tell them, "Mother took a trip"
Well, children cry for mother
I tell them, "Mother took a trip"
Well, I walk on pins and needles
I hope my tongue don't slip

Well, I gaze at passing strangers
In case I might see you
Yes, I gaze at passing strangers
In case I might see you
But the sun goes around the heavens
And another day just drives on through

Way out in the distance
I know you're with some other man
Way out in the distance
I know you're with some other man
But that's alright, baby
You know I always understand

Call girls in the doorway
All giving me the eye
Call girls in the doorway
All giving me the eye
But my heart's just not in it
I might as well pass right on by

My ears are ringin'
Ringin' like empty shells
My ears are ringin'
Ringin' like empty shells
Well, it can't be no guitar player
It must be convent bells"

Part of the measure of
Blood on the Tracks has to be taken from the fact that two songs that were left off the album "Call Letter Blues" (some lyrics ablove) and "Up to Me" are some of Dylan's best work. just a perfect album, even though "Up to Me" should have found a way on to the final release.

So I hosted a party last night with my sister, who rules. Very suave affair. It was a party to welcome my friend's lady to America. They are both Brits, and she has just moved from London to work here in the BBC's NYC bureau and to live with him. Good party.

Usual suspects of artists, art dealers and curators kicking around. The theme was "southern hospitality in a northern setting" so we went with fried chicken, biscuits, cornbread, greens, apple pie, jelly roll and tons of Veuve. I love Veuve. Cristal blows. People stayed real late. I like co-hosting with my sister, since her place is so rocking and her set of friends is way different than the reprobates I usually run around with. I felt strangely adult last night at times, when I wasn't talking like Beavis.

Talked fir a good part of the evening a woman who I just adore. She is just fantastic company, incredilby smart and quite lovely. So pretty you got avert your eyes after a while, like Japanese used to have to do before the Emperor. Certainly the prettiest English woman I've ever seen. She just bought an apartment in Soho and I'm going to go help her lug stuff up the stairs next weekend. Age old dynamic between men and women is that any sweet woman can bat an eyelash and command any number of us to lift furniture. Anyway, she's sure impressive, and it was nice to spend so much of the evening talking to her.

I felt nice, all in all during the whole event. I wasn't jumping for joy all night and I am not screaming from the rooftops about the love I've found this morning. But it was nice, and I'll take it. I knew this whole thing would take a while, and I am happy to just have felt a bit involved and to only have caught myself feeling dislocated a few times during the evening. Whatever, I'm working on a nice summer I imagine.

Baby steps, baby steps.
