where does the time fly off to?


so the other day a neighbor walks by, visits with my dogs a little. he asks how old they are, proceeds to tell me the highlights of his life. in under two minutes. and unless he's confused his life with a movie, he's closer to 90 than 80.

"life..what a crazy bunch of crap!"

his high/lowlights:

first wife, of German ancestry, cheated on him when he enlisted to fight in WWII. He divorced her before shipping out for battle in the Pacific theatre. He saw the flag get raised over Iwo Jima. Saw his Marine pals get sawed in half by Japanese machine gun fire, guts and gore floating onto the beach.

Felt abandoned by friends and family when he never got any letters at mail call. Got a penpal who wrote him, became long-distance sweethearts. Got out of the service, married her, had two sons.

Watched his "good for nothing, shiftless" 34-year old son drink himself to death.

Fast forward to now. "That's just a crazy bunch of crap they're pulling over there in Iraq- gas is still over $2 a gallon!"

Go good, dear neighbor, go good.
