if you know me, you know i love making pointless lists. so here, i bring you my list of my top 10 favorite female characters in movies and TV

10. Ellen Page as Juno MacGuff - Juno

every time i see this movie, i like it more. she is fucking hilarious in this movie. so many good lines. you cant help but crush a little which admittedly is kinda creepy since shes portraying a high schooler but cut me some slack. i like wise-asses. in all seriousness, Ellen Page is going to be a fucking star. shes so young and so talented already.

9. Reese Witherspoon as Tracy Flick - Election

truth be told, im not a fan of Reese Witherspoon as a rule but this movie is the exception. shes so goddamn good in this movie that she makes you want to reach into the screen and throttle her character until she expires. and yet even while being pushy and overbearing she manages to be sympathetic.

8. Mary Louise-Parker as Nancy Botwin and Elizabeth Perkins as Celia Hodes - Weeds

having two characters from the same show seemed redundant but i didnt want to choose one over the other so im using them both. the fact that there are no weak characters on the show is testament to the strong writing but without the performances both these ladies turn out itd be moot. they are polar opposites but both wonderful in their own way. Nancy i love for her strength and Celia i love for her abject bitchiness.

7. Helena Bonham-Carter as Marla Singer - Fight Club

being the flawed individual that i am, i always find myself strangely attracted to girls who are a complete trainwreck. its for this same reason that i have a thing for amy winehouse as well but thats another topic entirely. im not sure anyone else could have pulled this role off as well as HBC did.

6. Lauren Bacall as Marie "Slim" Browning - To Have & Have Not

my ex fiance turned me onto this movie. she absolutely loves Bogie and Bacall and for good reason. the two of them were golden whenever they were together on screen. this is my personal favorite of her. not just because shes one of the most beautiful actresses of all time but she was so nuanced. her line, "you know how to whistle dont you, Steve? you just put your lips together and blow..." fucking great.

5. Frances McDormand as Marge Gunderson - Fargo

that Minnesota accent makes me twitch but Frances McDormand is so wonderful in anything that id watch her eat cereal. this is easily her best performance and theres a lot of gems to choose from.

4. Annette Benning as Carolyn Burnham - American Beauty

shes a fucking nutter in this movie. kinda makes you want to punch her in the face and yet shes one of the most sympathetic characters in the movie. i still think she should have gotten Best Actress for her performance. she was fucking fabulous.

3. Terri Garr as Inga - Young Frankenstein

this was my favorite movie growing up and its still on my top 10. i had such a crush on both her and Madeline Kahn. she has some of the funniest lines in the movie. i wanted to have roll in the hay with her before i even knew what that meant.

2. Kate Hudson as Penny Lane - Almost Famous

i will admit having a predisposition towards the actress in question but i love the character for her depth. under the facade of confidence and indestructabiltiy is a lonely girl who wants to be loved. and she pulls it off in such a subtle and believable manner.

1. Kate Winslet as Clementine Krucynski - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

aside from the fact that i want to marry the actress, i loved this character because shes so real. the thing that made this movie superb was that despite the sci-fi aspect, it was one of the more honest and realistic depictions of a couple in a movie. i could really identify with Joel and Clementine reminded me of a few of my exes. in a good way. beautifully tragically flawed. and real.

That's a good way of thinking about that. Yay knowledge!

And I DID know about Jethro Cave, mostly because he's kinda pretty.

Most things reinforce my misanthropy, sadly.
